"Oligometastases describes a clinical scenario in
which a patient has metastases limited in number and extent. Our
study describes the outcome of 40 patients with oligometastatic
breast cancer, with 5 or fewer radiographically apparent
metastatic lesions, treated with curative-intent stereotactic
body radiation therapy (SBRT).Patients with metastases to more than one organ were not
excluded.The
actuarial 4-year overall survival was 59%, progression-free
survival was 38% and lesion local control (freedom from
radiographic growth) was 89%.Patients with bone-only metastases fared better with
respect to survival and disease control.Bulkier lesions exhibited poorer local control. The survival and progression free survival numbers are
promising.Breast
cancer can have a prolonged disease course, and thus longer
follow-up is needed to confirm the hypothesis that
oligometastatic disease is potentially curable with
multimodality therapy incorporating SBRT"
