Cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy for peritoneal surface disease from colorectal cancer

This paper demonstrates that in a single institution which performs both liver resection and cytoreductive surgery/intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy  for metastatic colorectal cancer, clinical outcomes are not significantly different.  Selected patients with peritoneal surface disease who undergo complete cytoreduction and intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy can achieve longterm survival with acceptable morbidity and mortality.  However there are still challenges presenting to patients with peritoneal surface disease from colorectal cancer in regards to preoperative imaging and standaradization of technique, approach, and prognostic factors.  Further research is indicated to determine the true efficacy of this multimodality approach to a very difficult clinical presentation.
